Can I research these digital files myself on-line?

Not yet. We're working on it. In the meantime, our experienced historical researchers will fulfill your requests and provide low res digital file submissions to you in a timely fashion. Keep reading for our time-to-deliver.

How soon will I receive a digital research after I place the request?

If your request is straightforward and simple, research will be provided within one day.

If a small request is needed ASAP that same day, please inform us of exact deadlines.

If a request is comprehensive covering a number of categories, more time will be required.

Please always provide your deadlines for comprehensive researches.

How will I receive the low res digital research submission?

Three possibilities:
  1. Low resolution files as email attachments
  2. Via FTP upload (you provide FTP coordinates and we put your submission files there for you.)
  3. Via web download (we provide a Culver web address and you use web browser software to download the files).

Once I decide to purchase a selected image or images, how will I receive an appropriate High Res Digital File of the selected image or images?
  • If you are an existing client with an account, have filled out a credit application or can provide your credit card number, Culver will deliver your high res file or files to you using web delivery, on DVD or CD via messenger or FedEx, or as above, we can also push files onto your FTP server.
  • If you've never done business with Culver before, you must clear your order through our Permissions department before you can receive an order on credit.

Are high res digital files available for comping purchases?

Yes, we can deliver high res digital files for comping. A fee of $50.00 per high res comp will be billed, and all comp charges will be deducted from your final license fee.

Will I receive a high res digital file ready for final production?

We provide rare archival images: Highly damaged prints are rare but there may be variations in the quality of the prints that have been scanned. Culver will provide a file free of scanning artifacts but not necessarily fully restored. If an image requires extensive retouching or restoration due to scratches, tears, excessive dirt or missing picture etc., we will inform you and if you wish, retouch and restore for you ($40 an hour). An estimate of the retouching time will be provided. You may also choose to accept the image as-is and retouch yourself.

What is the largest file size I can receive?

Most files are approximately 50mb—enough for 11×17 tabloid or A3 reproduction @ 300 DPI. In some cases, resolution will be lower. Larger files can sometimes be provided for a small courtesy charge.

Are Culver's images Rights Managed or Royalty Free?

Our images are Rights Managed. We sell licenses that allow you or your client to use our images in very specific ways that include:
  1. Media (Newspaper, books, magazines, web, billboards, documentary, etc.)
  2. Territory (North America, World, Etc.)
  3. Size on the page and promience in the publication
  4. Print run/Circulation
  5. Insertions
  6. Length of time the image will appear

  8. Industry

Bottom line: Please contact our Research or Permissions department to get a usage license that is based on your specific requirements.
