1639-1790742: These soot-covered Nelms coal miners have just come up out of the shaft and are heading to the washhouse. The pails they carry are for food and water underground. One widow of a Nelms miner said her husband always took extra food-so he wouldn't starve if trapped by an explosion. Feb, 1941. |
